Windsor Historic District Commission

Windsor's Historic District was created in 1963 as one of Connecticut's first local historic districts.  The district begins at the Farmington River Bridge on Palisado Avenue and runs to Bissell's Ferry Road.  It extends 250 feet in width on each side of Palisado Avenue and runs 500 feet west on Pierson Lane and on North Meadow Road south to the Farmington River.

The Historic District Commission regulates modifications to any permanent structures that are visible from the street.  The Commission does not regulate the use of buildings or changes to the inside of a building.

Normal maintenance may not require a property owner to go before the Historic District Commission.  If you are not sure, you may contact the building inspector at Town Hall.

General Procedure for Historic District Review:

  • Application to construct modifications to a property in the Historic District may be obtained from the Building Inspector.

  • When the application is received, the Commission will set a date for a hearing and you will be notified of the scheduled date, time and location.

  • You may provide information and details at the hearing to assist the Commission in its decision-making process.

  • If your application is approved, a "Certificate of Appropriateness" will be issued.

The Palisado Avenue Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  In addition, the National Register lists several other Windsor structures and brick thematic structures located in various neighborhoods throughout Windsor.
