Drive Wise

Neighborhood traffic is a hot button issue in communities nationwide. Communities have struggled to find creative ways to successfully affect drivers’ behavior, slowing them down or encouraging them to use preferred routes. It is a difficult and constant issue.

The Town of Windsor has a traffic calming program that is designed to reduce the negative effects of motor vehicle use, alter driver behavior and improve conditions for non-motorized street users. (Click here to read more about the traffic calming program.)

A good traffic calming solution to any neighborhood traffic problem has four parts:

  1. Engineering
  2. Enforcement
  3. Education
  4. Enhancement

Drive Wise is the education element of the town’s traffic calming program. This speeding awareness campaign launched in December 2010. In the future, look for more information on this webpage about the campaign.

If you are interested in getting involved with the Drive Wise campaign or the traffic calming program, please contact Zack Viereck of the Engineering Department at 860-285-1868.

Digital Speed Display Signs

The town owns three sets of Digital Speed Display Signs (DSDS). These signs are rotated throughout town to collect traffic data and to warn drivers to slow down. Even when the signs are not flashing, they are counting passing vehicles and recording speeds. The signs are part of the town’s traffic calming program and are also used to collect data that is helpful for making road design and repair, traffic signage and traffic enforcement decisions.

The town’s traffic calming volunteers and town employees in the Police, Engineering and Public Works Departments are all involved with operating and maintaining the signs.

The signs are typically in one location for 2 to 8 weeks.

Town staff and residents suggest where the signs should be used. If you would like to add a street to the DSDS list, please contact Zack Viereck of the Engineering Department at 860-285-1868.
