Street Sweeping

Sweeping of all Windsor streets and parking lots is scheduled to begin this week.  Delays may occur due to weather conditions, but sweeping will continue until the entire town has been swept.

Each year the order of sweeping is rotated so that no one section of town is always first or last.  This year, the crews will begin in the northern portion of Windsor, and then sweep the southern section and lastly the center.  A detailed listing of streets and neighborhoods, as well as updated information are available on the town’s website.  The sweeping will be performed in the neighborhoods listed below in the following order:

1.      Rainbow area

2.      River Street, Strawberry Hill neighborhood

3.      Walden Meadow, Prospect Hill neighborhoods

4.      Poquonock, Farmstead, Village Lane neighborhood

5.      Bloomfield area, Dudley Town Rd. neighborhood

6.      Matianuck Ave. area

7.      Willowcrest, Meadowbrook, Green Manor neighborhoods

8.      Wilson area

9.      Deerfield area

10.    Arrowbrook, Oakland Hills neighborhoods

11.    Clover, Plymouth, Ludlow, Nook Farms neighborhoods

12.    Windsor Center

13.    Mill Brook (Mack St., East St., Pleasant St. neighborhood)

14.    Hayden Station, Pilgrim Village, Palisado neighborhoods

Sweeping of town streets will be postponed during school vacation to allow crews to clean the school parking lots.   The Day Hill Corporate Corridor will be swept over two Saturdays during this period.  It is estimated street sweeping will be completed by the first week of June, weather permitting.   For more information, call 285-1855.

American Veterans Traveling Tribute

The American Veterans Traveling Tribute, a replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. that is 80% of the actual size, will be on display on the Windsor Town Green April 27 through April 30.  The exhibit is a tribute to all men and women who served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

This 8-foot high by 370 foot-long wall, is the largest exhibit of its kind.  Windsor will mark its very first visit to the Northeast.   Like the actual memorial, it lists the names of men and women who died in the Vietnam War, and features computers with databases and printers to help people locate names on the wall. An exhibit of artwork by veterans of many U.S. conflicts is featured. Supplies also will be available so people can make rubbings of individual names to remember.

The visit by American Veterans Traveling Tribute is presented by Windsor’s First Town Downtown organization, with the help of the Town of Windsor and the Windsor Chamber of Commerce.

Volunteers are currently being organized.  If you would like to become involved, or would like more information, call 683-8410.

MDC Supplemental Tax Levy

The town was recently notified that the MDC Board of Commissioners voted on Monday, March 6, 2006 to withdraw the supplemental tax levy imposed upon member towns in December of 2005.  That levy was intended to cover the anticipated loss of revenue resulting from the early termination by the CRRA of MDC services at the Mid-Connecticut waste processing facility in Hartford.

Productive discussions between CRRA and the MDC in recent weeks have lead to an agreement in which the MDC will withdraw their lawsuit and CRRA will not terminate MDC or hire a replacement contractor for operation of the Mid-Connecticut Project waste processing facility and landfill during the remaining years of the contract (through 2011).

The agreement allows the MDC to rescind the half-year supplemental tax levy, which provides an immediate savings to Windsor of $69,440.  Since these costs would have recurred each year, the agreement saves the town a total of $763,840.

Route 305 Study

As a follow-up to information I provided the Town Council this past fall, I would like to give a brief update on the Route 305 Study.  The scope of the work for this project is being drafted by CRCOG.  A request for proposals will be issued this summer.  I am somewhat disappointed at the timeframe of the study, which is slated to be at least a year long effort.  We will follow the study closely and have requested that CRCOG focus on the I91 and Route 305 interchange early on in the study process.
