Windsor Walk of Light

In commemoration of the 5th anniversary of 9/11, the Town of Windsor will be hosting a “Walk of Light” remembrance ceremony on the town green Monday, September 11, 2006.   2,973 luminary bags, each inscribed with the name of a person who lost their life on 9/11 and decorated by Windsor students and members of the community will line the sidewalks of the green.  At dusk the bags will be illuminated with glow sticks.  A remembrance ceremony will be held at 7:00 PM.  Following the ceremony, those in attendance can stroll the town green and view the bags, providing an opportunity for visitors to reflect on the events of 9/11 in their own way.  For more information call 285-1835 or visit http://www.townofwindsorct.com/edirect/200wwl.htm.

 

 

Citizens Academy

Registrations for the 3rd session of the Town of Windsor Citizen’s Academy are now being accepted.  The seven-week interactive program begins September 20th in the Town Hall Council Chambers from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM.  Learn more about the operations of various town and Board of Education departments, how you can participate in the decisions of the Town Council, take a tour the town and participate in a scavenger hunt that will uncover facts about Windsor you never knew!   After beginning on September 20th, the Citizen’s Academy will continue on seven consecutive Wednesday evenings at various town facilities.  The program is free, and anyone 18 years or older, living or working in Windsor is welcome to apply.  Register by calling 285-1835 or visiting the town’s website at www.townofwindsorct.com. 



 

September is Freedom Trail Month in Connecticut

In celebration of the 11th year of Connecticut Freedom Trail Month, the Archer Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church and the Windsor Freedom Trail Committee will host two Windsor Freedom Trail events in September.  The Freedom Trail Celebration; Saturday, September 9, 2006, from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM  will be held on the Archer Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church grounds; 318 Hayden Station Road in Windsor.  This event is a community day of celebration through commemorative ceremonies, gospel music, food, vendors, activities, games, and fun for the whole family.  During the afternoon hours, there will be a special memorial ceremony at Archer’s historic cemetery and singing by area gospel groups.  Rev. Timothy Howard, Presiding Elder of the A.M.E. Zion Church Western District will give the keynote address for the occasion.

The Windsor Freedom Trail Run will be held Saturday, September 16, 2006, beginning at 5:30 AM at Archer Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church.  The Freedom Trail Run provides individuals and families an opportunity to pay tribute to those who fled from the South in search of freedom by way of the Underground Railroad and to those who helped along the way.  This year’s run is approximately 3.9 miles, and will end at the Riverside cemetery on East Street in Windsor, Windsor’s newest Freedom Trail site, where a number of African American soldiers from the all Black Connecticut 29th and 31st regiments and other civil war units are buried.  Run the full 3.9 miles or any portion of it.  Transportation will be provided for the runners to rest.  Participants will stop at the other Windsor Freedom Trail sites including the Joseph Rainey House and the Nancy Toney gravesite.  Upon returning to the church, participants will visit the historic Archer cemetery.  A Freedom Trail T-Shirt will be given to all runners and a country style breakfast will be served at the church for event participants to enjoy after the run.  To sign up for the run, call Alfred Narcisse at 688-2479.  These events are open to the public and all are welcome to participate.  Join in the fun and learn more about Windsor’s four Freedom Trail sites.  These Windsor Freedom Trail events are supported and sponsored by the Windsor Freedom Trail Committee, Archer Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church, the Town of Windsor, and Windsor Federal Savings. 

 

 

Second Tax Billing Mailing

The second tax billing has been mailed. This bill is due September 1st with interest beginning to accrue for payments not received by October 1st.  Residents are reminded that any bills less than $1 were not billed per the Council’s action on August 7th.



 

Chamber Breakfast at Main Library

The Main Library will host the Windsor Chamber of Commerce’s September business breakfast tomorrow morning, September 6th  from 7:30 AM to 9:00 AM.  Library staff will be providing tours of the building and highlighting its many new features.


 

 

Crime Spree Resolved

As a result of some intensive Police work and the cooperation of Windsor residents, a case involving a significant number of thefts to unlocked vehicles, including a stolen contractor's truck and trailer in the vicinity of Kennedy Road has been resolved.  There were a number of residents affected by the thefts, and many were questioned by police.

The suspect of these crimes is currently being detained in a locked setting.

The Police appreciate the cooperation of those involved and encourage all Windsor residents to continue reporting any suspicious or criminal behavior in a timely fashion.  In addition, police remind homeowners to exercise good security habits by locking homes and vehicles while un-attended. 

 

 

Dual Grants Awarded

The Senior Center and the Caring Connection Adult Day Health Center have both been approved by the North Central Area Agency on Aging, Inc. Board of Directors to receive grants.  Both are for the time period of October 1, 2006 through September 30, 2007.

The Senior Center grant in the amount of $7,108 in Title III funds will support the “Transportation for Seniors” project.  These funds will be used to provide transportation services to our elderly population for specific evening and weekend programming.

The Caring Connection grant is in the amount of $15,733 for "Client Subsidies" Title III funding.  Private pay clients attending the program receive financial funding to assist in payment for attendance days at the adult day center.

These grant funds are federally funded by the Older Americans Act and channeled through the North Central Area Agency on Aging located in Hartford, CT.
