Engineering
Updates
Pleasant Street Reconstruction, Phase 3:
A contract has been awarded to Simscroft-Echo
Farms, Inc. They plan to start the work this month,
installing both the water main and sanitary sewer main this
year, returning in the spring to do the road reconstruction,
sidewalks, etc. While construction is underway, only local
traffic will be able to traverse the roadway. The road will
be opened to two-way traffic at the end of each work day.
Rainbow Road/International Drive Infrastructure
Improvements:
The contractor, Dufford Construction of
Glastonbury has started work on the construction of the 2
additional lanes for International Drive, including a
traffic signal at the intersection of Rainbow Road, and a
traffic circle near the East Granby line. This work will
extend into next calendar year with the substantial
completion expected by the early to mid part of July.
Public Works Updates
Pavement projects:
The following
streets were paved over the last month: Columbia Road,
Patriot Drive, Vinlen Drive, and Glenwood Drive. All of the
driveway entrance work on these streets was completed by
Public Works. Tunxis Street will be resurfaced following
the completion of the drainage work (see below). Hamilton
Road is also planned to have a thin overlay installed
following the work on Tunxis. The thin overlay will be done
from Route 20 to about 50 feet north of the planted island.
Pavement reclamation work on Legion Drive
and Holmes Drive is underway. The majority of the work is
being done by our Public Works crews. Paving is being
contracted out and we are awaiting the availability of
contractor to finalize the timing of the work. Once the
streets are paved curbing will be installed on both
streets. After this, the driveway entrances will be rebuilt
and lawn sections will be graded and seeded. To inform the
residents of the remaining work schedule, we will be putting
out another door hanger with information as we get it from
the contractor.
Public Works crews
have been placing skim coats of asphalt on sections of
selected streets that are in poor condition. The reason for
this work is to make certain street sections safer by
reducing the number of potholes that develop, and reducing
the number of complaints regarding potholes. The street
receiving most of this work has been Stone Road. The three
sections of the street are: the “S” curve near the West
Brook culvert, the section near Rainbow Road, and the
section between the East Granby town line and the Walgreens
site.
Drainage
projects:
The Public Works drainage crew has been
working on Tunxis Street the last three or four weeks. The
existing drainage system on the street was in poor condition
which led to damage to the pavement. Work has included
replacing most of the drainage structures (catch basins,
storm sewer lines, manhole structures, etc.) Paving will be
completed later this fall. By doing the majority of the
work with our own crews we are saving significant dollars
and getting the street repaired sooner than if we
incorporated this into our six year capital plan.
