Police Explorers Awards
I would like to recognize the Windsor Police Explorers for their outstanding achievements at Law Enforcement Stations Day, a competition held at the Municipal Police Academy in Meriden, CT on Saturday, May 12, 2007.
For the sixth time in the last eight years, the Windsor Police Explorers were awarded “Best Overall Post.” Approximately thirty-five posts from Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York attended this year’s competition.
In addition to the “”Overall Post” recognition, many of the explorers received awards for individual achievement in a variety of competitions. Congratulations to all who participated.

June is Dog Licensing Month
In Connecticut, the month of June is the time to license your dog. All dogs six months of age or older must be licensed each year. Registration can be done in person at the Town Clerk’s Office or through the mail. Fees for a dog license are $8.00 for a spayed or neutered dog, or $19.00 for a dog that has not been spayed or neutered. If you are registering by mail, please send a self-addressed stamped envelope with payment.
All those purchasing a license need to provide a valid rabies certificate and a certificate stating that your dog has been spayed or neutered.
The “Just for Fun Dog Show” will be held on Thursday, June 21st on the town green. Registration begins at 5:30 PM and the judging begins at 6:00 PM.
For more information, call the Town Clerk’s Office at 285-1902.

Pool Safety Reminder
The Building Official would like to remind residents that all pools containing water over 24” deep, including temporary use or storable pools require a building permit. Storable type pools may be plugged into a GFI protected outlet that must be at least 10’ from the pool. This is a Connecticut state statute. If you have questions regarding the pool you have or plan to set up in your backyard this summer, please call the building department at 285-1960.

Super Summer Teen Adventures Camp
There are still some openings available in the Youth Services Bureau summer teen adventure camp which offers a wide variety of activities for middle and high school youth. Each of the four sessions has a different theme, and all sessions include activities in art, computers, tennis, fishing, games and cooking as well as some optional overnight adventures. Summer Teen Adventures meet Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the L.P. Wilson Community Center.

Bus Shelters
Staff has been involved in discussions with the Capital Region Council of Governments, (CRCOG) regarding possible ways to collaborate with other towns and CT Transit regarding installation and maintenance of bus shelters. Currently each town is responsible for constructing, maintaining and repairing bus shelters. CRCOG is exploring the possibilities of having the shelters managed on a regional basis so day to day responsibilities are “shifted” from individual towns to a regional basis.
Staff plans to participate in further discussions over the summer months to explore the pros and cons of such an approach.

Stormwater Management and Earth Day Activities

The Rotary Club of Windsor/Windsor Locks spent this past Saturday marking catch basins in Windsor with "No Dumping" stickers and dispensed educational flyers to residents. Approximately 350 basins were completed. The Rotary Club will continue to mark basins periodically over the summer and into the fall. This has been an ongoing volunteer project as part of our compliance with stormwater management regulations.  My thanks go out to the Rotary Club for their help.
Also, we have installed five catch basin inserts in the Poquonock area as a pilot project to monitor effectiveness of pollutant removal. Baseline sampling has been done and will be used as a comparative tool going forward.
In late April staff sponsored a series of events on Earth Day. Over 50 volunteers helped pick up approximately 1.5 tons of trash and debris from various locations in town. Also over 300 residents came to Northwest Park and enjoyed a variety of demonstrations and programs. Over $900 was raised for the Open Space fund through a raffle, Cans for Conservation program in the schools and a donation from the Exchange Club.  Thank you to all who participated.
